The UK is currently recording the highest number of CoV deaths in the world relative to its population. On a seven-day moving average, there were more than 16.5 deaths per million people recently. That’s according to a recent evaluation by Oxford University, based on data from Johns Hopkins University. That puts the U.K. just ahead of the Czech Republic and Portugal.
Today, the number of deaths reported within 24 hours reached a high of 1,610. Overall, the number of deaths in the UK where Covid-19 was recorded on the death certificate now stands at just under 96,000, but as this figure is always reported with some delay, it is thought to be as high as around 108,000 deaths already.
Antibody study: one in eight people in England already infected
The largest part of the country, England, has been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. There up to December more than twelve per cent of humans had gone through an estimated Coronavirus infection, as from an antibody study of the statistics authority ONS (Office for national statistics) results. That equates to about one in eight.
Nationwide, it is said to be about one and one in 10. However, analysis has shown that the amount of antibodies can dwindle rapidly after an infection – so the actual figure could be higher. In November, the rate in England was just under nine percent.
